The Park at Winnipeg’s Millennium Library is an intensely-used green roof and a vibrant extension of Manitoba’s busiest library. The park acts as an urban oasis, a public commons and a neverland, bringing the rich literary history of Manitoba into the landscape for visitors of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Infused with an urban wetland, boardwalk, prairie and parkland gardens, performance and rest areas, the park is fully activated by intense four-season programming led by the Downtown Business Improvement Zone. Throughout the year, public activities are held in the park, such as public readings, art walks, yoga classes, snow maze builds, musical performances, food festivals, and wine tastings.

Three major public art installations, including the iconic emptyful further activate the park 24 hours a day. Adaptive gardens introduce prairie grassland, wetland and riverbottom forest plant communities to urban dwellers while providing habitat for fauna. A rainwater harvesting system and windmill aerators reduce park energy consumption. Phase two of the park, ‘The Urban Porch’, connects the park to the urban fabric with a series of vendor terraces, seating nodes, light sculptures and expanded river-bottom forest gardens.

In 2015, the project received the Award of Excellence in Landscape Architecture in the Premier’s Awards of Design Excellence.
