After four years of supporting this project, HTFC

After four years of supporting this project, HTFC is thrilled to celebrate the Public Launch of the Kitaskeenan Kaweekanawaynichikatek Indigenous Protected Area initiative. The project is a partnership of York Factory First Nation, Tataskweyak Cree Nation, Fox Lake Cree Nation, Shamattawa First Nation, and War Lake First Nation.

The five Nations are uniting to create an Indigenous-led protected area on their shared ancestral lands in northeastern Manitoba and along the Hudson Bay coastline.

The two-day public launch event was hosted by Fox Lake Cree Nation (FLCN) at their Culture Camp in Bird, Manitoba. Over 200 people attended, including leaders of the five Nations, Grand Chiefs from KTC and MKO, MLA Eric Redhead, federal government staff, environmental organizations, and many members of the five Nations.

Thank you to FLCN for a fantastic week, and to Manitoba and Canada for attending the launch and supporting this exciting work. Thank you to Karsten Wall for the beautiful photographs.

HTFC staff are taking part in events in Winnipeg and Saskatoon today as part of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Knowing it’s important to continue learning and taking action throughout the year, HTFC continues to set goals and report on our activities through our commitments under the City of Winnipeg Indigenous Accord:

- to learn and acknowledge truths
- to integrate lessons into our work
- and to take action for a better society

The Indigenous Accord program helps organizations in the city to build new initiatives, partnerships, and advance reconciliation efforts. The Accord and its annual gathering of signatories has been a great framework and resource for our firm to advance reconciliation efforts guided by the 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

While National Forest Week may have you thinking a

While National Forest Week may have you thinking about wide expanses of wilderness, the urban canopy is one of our most vital tools in reducing urban heat islands and cooling our warming cities.

Thriving urban trees need space to grow, therefore, we are proponents of using soil cells for trees being planted in heavily trafficked areas of the city. Soil cells are a plastic, modular system that creates a supported cavity below the pavement that can hold a large volume of soil to support large tree growth. This prevents compaction from day-to-day city life, allowing street trees to grow quicker, larger, and have a much longer life span. Additional stormwater management features can be combined with these cell systems to direct water towards the tree’s roots and away from stormwater drains.

HTFC had a great time on the water last week as part of Winnipeg Design Festival’s SaturWAYS waterways tours!

Author, director, and activist, Clayton Thomas-Müller, opened the session with drumming and spoke about the importance of water and the need to protect it. University of Manitoba Landscape Architecture professor, Jean Trottier, spoke on his recent @csla_aapc award-winning Little Forks National Urban Park proposal for the Seine River and surrounding areas. Finally, Glen Manning, CSLA Fellow and Principal at HTFC, touched on the history of planning and design projects along the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, stemming from master planning projects in the 70s, 80s and more recent years. He talked about river dynamics, shoreline remediation, and touched on the history of the vehicular and pedestrian paired bridges known as Provencher Bridge.

Thank you to Winnipeg Waterways for the beautiful cruise and Winnipeg Design Fest for organizing the event. We are looking forward to more Design Fest events this month!
