In collaboration with civil engineering team members, HTFC helped the Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation to plan a new community site on the shores of Lac des Milles Lacs in Northwestern Ontario. The site was the historic home of the First Nation until the remaining members left in the 1950s due to pressures resulting from repeated flooding.

The planning process included population projection scenarios to estimate migration into the new community and a detailed technical analysis of the reserve land’s capability for different types of development. HTFC conducted extensive and varied community consultations, which led to the incorporation of the unique desires, goals and needs of a population that has lived away from their home community for generations.

Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation’s Community Plan provides for immediate and short-term development as well as directing long-term land use and infrastructure development serving the social, cultural and economic needs of the community as it grows into the future.
