Manitoba Hydro Place

HTFC worked with PFS Studio on this multi-award-winning office tower in downtown Winnipeg. Providing site design for one of the ‘greenest’ office buildings in the world demanded research, customization and innovation in all aspects of the work. Administratively, the project required coordinating with an international design team composed of more than 24 firms through a sequential tender process, on a site with shared provincial and municipal ownership.

HTFC was specifically responsible for the detailed sitework design and implementation, as well as facilitating Aboriginal involvement in the design. The street level plaza – Graham Grove – is an urban success story, hosting a weekly farmer’s market and providing a lush respite to workers and passersby. HTFC also spearheaded the inclusion of a rainwater/condensate reclamation system for irrigation, and with KPMB Architects detailed Winnipeg’s most ambitious green roof.

This well-used plaza forms the main outdoor space for the thousands of Hydro employees and bus commuters using Graham Avenue on a daily basis. The space acts as a comfortable, south facing, green pocket on an otherwise hard edged street. Local stone mixes with steel and concrete in patterns softened by mass plantings and bosques of stately elms. Below the surface of this sustainable plaza, a massive cistern captures stormwater for the building’s green roof and plaza irrigation systems.
